  • Centenary Bank was founded in 1983 as an initiative of the Uganda National Lay Apostolate. It was originally known as the Centenary Rural Development Bank, with a focus on providing financial services to rural communities. The bank has since expanded its operations to serve customers in urban areas as well. Centenary Bank is a publicly owned company, with its shares listed on the Uganda Securities Exchange. As of September 2021, the largest shareholders in the bank were the Government of Uganda (with a 58.6% stake), followed by the National Social Security Fund (with a 10.3% stake).

    According to the bank's financial statements for the first half of 2021, Centenary Bank recorded a profit before tax of UGX 72.5 billion (approximately USD 19.9 million) and total assets of UGX 4.1 trillion (approximately USD 1.1 billion).

  • Standard Chartered Bank Uganda Limited is an international Bank with a rich history spanning over 109 years of existence in the Ugandan market, having opened its doors on 12th August 1912, making it the longest established Commercial Bank in the country.

It was established in 1927 as Barclays Bank (Dominion, Colonial, and Overseas) and has been operating in the country ever since. In 1969, it became Barclays Bank of Uganda Limited and in 2020, it rebranded to Absa Bank Uganda Limited following the completion of the sale of Barclays Africa Group Limited’s majority stake in Barclays Bank of Uganda Limited to Absa Group Limited.

    Absa Bank Uganda Limited has a network of branches and ATMs across the country. Customers can also access its products and services through its digital banking platforms such as online banking, mobile banking, and USSD banking. As of my knowledge cutoff in September 2021, Absa Bank Uganda Limited was the fourth largest bank in Uganda by assets, with total assets of UGX 2.7 trillion (approximately USD 716 million).   • A subsidiary of dfcu Limited, dfcu Bank is a leading banking and financial services company domiciled in Uganda. It came into existence in May 2000 following dfcu’s acquisition of Gold Trust Bank to extend universal banking services alongside the pre-existing equity finance; long-term development finance; leasing and working capital finance. Dfcu Limited was started by the Commonwealth Development Corporation (CDC) of the United Kingdom and the Government of Uganda through the Uganda Development Corporation (UDC) under the name of the Development Finance Company of Uganda Limited.

    The subsequent restructuring saw International Finance Corporation (IFC) and the German Development Corporation (DEG) invest resulting in an equal stake of 25% for the shareholders. Its objective was to support long-term development projects whose financing needs and risk did not appeal to the then-existing financial commercial lending institutions.
